Current English တွင် အသုံးများသော and ဖြင့် ဆက်ထားသည့် စကားစုလေးများ

ဒီ post မှာတော့ နေ့စဉ်သုံး အင်္ဂလိပ်စာနဲ့ စကားမှာ native speaker တွေက တွင်ကျယ်စွာ အသုံးပြုနေကြသေးလို့ current ဖြစ်နေသေးတယ်လို့ ယူဆလို့ရနိုင်တဲ့ usage လေး ဆယ်ခုကို နမူနာဝါကျလေးတွေနဲ့ ဖော်ပြပေးပါ့မယ်။ သူတို့အားလုံးဟာ စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးနဲ့ နောက်တစ်လုံးကို ခလယ်မှ and ဖြင့် ချိတ်ဆက်ထားတဲ့ phrase လေးတွေဖြစ်ကြပါတယ်။ စကြည့်လိုက်ကြစို့။

 1. apples and oranges 

(ဒီနေ့ အမျိုးသမီးတစ်ယောက် ရိုးရာဝတ်စုံဝတ်ထားတဲ့ပုံကို social media မှာ လူတွေဝေဖန်နေကြတာတွေ့လို့ ဒီ expression "apples and oranges" ဆိုတာလေးကို သတိရမိသွားတယ်။ ဒါနဲ့ပဲ ဒီလို phrases လေးတွေကို ဆက်စဉ်းစားမိပြီး ဒီ post ကိုရေးဖြစ်သွားတာပါ။)

apples and oranges ပန်းသီးတွေနဲ့ လိမ္မော်သီးတွေတဲ့။ တူမှ မတူတာပဲ၊ သစ်သီးတော့ သစ်သီးပဲပေါ့။ ဒါပေမယ့် နှိုင်းယှဉ်လို့ရလောက်အောင် မတူပါဘူး။ နံ့သာဆီနဲ့ "ဟိုဒင်း" ဆိုတာလိုမျိုး။ မတူရင် မတုနဲ့။ မတူတာကို မနှိုင်းယှဉ်ပါနဲ့လို့ ပြောချင်တဲ့အခါမှာ apples and oranges လို့ သုံးကြပါတယ်။

to compare apples and/with oranges လို့လည်း ဝါကျထဲ ထည့်သုံးနိုင်ပုံကို အတွဲလိုက်မှတ်ထားပါ။

ကိုကိုနဲ့ ဘိုဘိုတို့အကြောင်းကို တန်းတူထားပြောလို့မရဘူး။ ဆီနဲ့ ရေ၊ တူမှ မတူတာကွာ။

အလားတူ နောက်ထပ် usage တစ်ခုကတော့ like chalk and cheese တဲ့။ chalk မြေဖြူခဲနဲ့ cheese ဒိန်ခဲ ဘယ်ယှဉ်လို့ရနိုင်မှာလဲနော်။ 

 2. bread and butter

 ပေါင်မုန့်နဲ့ ထောပတ်။ သူတို့အတွက်တော့ bread and butter ဟာ နေ့စဉ် မရှိမဖြစ် အဓိကအစားအစာပေါ့။ မြန်မာစကားမှာတော့ အသက်ရှင်ဖို့ စားရတဲ့ ထမင်းနဲ့ ဟင်းပေါ့။ တကယ်တော့ bread and butter ဆိုတာ မိမိ စားဝတ်နေရေးအတွက် ဝင်ငွေရှာဖို့ အဓိကလုပ်နေရတဲ့ အလုပ်ကိုခေါ်တာ။ ကိုယ့်ရဲ့ ကျေးဇူးရှင် "ထမင်းအိုး" လို့ မြန်မာစကားမှာ တင်စားသုံးသလိုပေါ့။

📍I do a lot of writing, but teaching is my bread and butter.

ကျွန်တော် စာတွေ တော်တော်ရေးပါတယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် စာသင်တဲ့အလုပ်ကတော့ အဓိကအလုပ်ပါ။

 3. cat and mouse

 ကြောင်နဲ့ ကြွက်ဆိုတော့ တချိန်လုံး မတည့်အတူနေ လိုက်တမ်းပြေးတမ်းကစားနေကြတဲ့ Tom and Jerry ကို မြင်ယောင်ကြည့်လိုက်ပါ။ အဲဒီ သဘောပါပဲ။ ကိုယ့်ရန်ဖက်ကို ဒုက္ခရောက်အောင် ထောင်ချောက်ဆင်လိုက်၊ ချောက်တွန်းလိုက်၊ ဟိုက ကိုယ့်ကိုပြန်လိုက်တော့ ထွက်ပြေးလိုက်နဲ့ ဖြစ်နေတာမျိုး။

to play cat and mouse with someone လို့လည်း ဝါကျထဲမှာ ထည့်သုံးဖို့ အတွဲလိုက်မှတ်ထားပါ။

📍The youths have played cat and mouse with the police. 

လူငယ်လေးတွေဟာ ရဲနဲ့ လိုက်တမ်းပြေးတမ်းကစားနေကြသလိုပါပဲ။

 4. whims and fancies

whim ဆိုတာ ပေါက်ပေါက်ရှာရှာ စိတ်ကူး။ ကြံကြံဖန်ဖန်စိတ်ကူး။ စိတ်ကူးပေါက်ရာ။ fancy ဆိုတာလည်း ဒီမှာ imagination စိတ်ကူးစိတ်သန်းကို ပြောတာပဲ။ whims and fancies ဆိုပြီး reduplicative နှစ်ထပ် ထပ်သုံးထားတာ။ တစ်ခုခုကို စိတ်ရူးပေါက်သလို ထလုပ်တတ်တာကို to do something on a whim လို့ သုံးရတယ်။

I just drove out of Rangoon on a whim.

ငါ စိတ်ကူးပေါက်လို့ ရန်ကုန်မြို့ပြင်ဖက် ကားမောင်းထွက်ချခဲ့တယ်။

📍We do not have to satisfy her whims and fancies.

သူ စိတ်ရူးပေါက်သမျှပြောတာတွေကို ငါတို့ လိုက်လုပ်ပေးဖို့ မလိုပါဘူး။

 5. sugar and spice

ဒီ usage ကတော့ မိန်းကလေးတွေအတွက် သုံးကြတာ။ sugar သကြားနဲ့ spice ဟင်းခပ်အမွှေးအကြိုင်တွေ ရောထားတာတဲ့။ သဘောကောင်းတယ်၊ ဖော်ဖော်ရွေရွေရှိတယ်လို့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရတယ်။ What Are Little Boys Made of? ဆိုတဲ့ nursery rhyme သားချော့တေးထဲက စာသားဖြစ်တဲ့ girls are made of "sugar and spice and everything nice." ဆိုတာကနေ ဆင်းသက်လာတဲ့ usage လို့ ယူဆကြပါတယ်။

📍My sister is usually all sugar and spice, but if you make her mad, she'll bite your head off!

ငါ့ညီမက အပြောချို သဘောကောင်းပေမယ့် သူ့ဒေါသထွက်အောင် သွားလုပ်လို့ကတော့ နင့်ကို ဂုတ်ချိုးသတ်မှာ။

 6. part and parcel

part ဆိုတာ အပိုင်း၊ parcel ဆိုတာ အထုပ်ဆိုတာအပြင် မြေကွက်အစိတ်အပိုင်းလို့လည်း အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရတယ်။ ဒါဟာလည်း whims and fancies လိုမျိုး အဓိပ္ပာယ်ဆင်တာကို reduplicative ထပ်ဆင့်သုံးထားတဲ့ usage တစ်ခုပဲ။ part and parcel of something လို့သုံးတယ်။ မရှိမဖြစ် ပါဝင်နေတဲ့ ကိစ္စ အစိတ်အပိုင်းဖြစ်လို့ ကြိုက်သည်ဖြစ်စေ၊ မကြိုက်သည်ဖြစ်စေ၊ ရှောင်ရှားလို့မရဘူး။ မိန်းမယူရင် ယောက္ခမကြီးပါ ပါလာတာမျိုး၊ အတူ တွဲယူရတဲ့ ကိစ္စမျိုး။

📍Stress is part and parcel of the job.

အလုပ်လုပ်တယ်ဆိုမှတော့ စိတ်ဖိစီးမှုတော့ ရှိတာပေါ့။

 7. doom and gloom

doom ဆိုတာ သေခြင်း၊ ပျက်ကိန်း၊ ဂြိုဟ်ဆိုး၊ ကြမ္မာဆိုး။

gloom ကတော့ ဝမ်းနည်းပူဆွေးခြင်း၊ စိတ်ဓာတ်ကျခြင်း၊စိတ်အားငယ်ခြင်း။

အဲဒီ နှစ်လုံးကိုပေါင်းပြီး doom and gloom/ gloom and doom လို့သုံးလိုက်တော့ စိတ်ကုန် စရာ၊ လက်မှိုင်ချစရာ၊ စိတ်ဓာတ်ကျစရာ၊ အဆိုးချည်း စသည့်အဓိပ္ပာယ်တွေရပါတယ်။ doom နဲ့ gloom ကို တစ်လုံးချင်း အသံထွက်ဆိုကြည့်ပါလား။ စိတ်ဓာတ်ကျစရာ အသံကြီးသာ ကြားရလိမ့်မယ်။

📍These days the papers are filled with stories of gloom and doom.

ဒီရက်တွေမှာ သတင်းစာတွေကလည်း စိတ်ညစ်စရာ သတင်းတွေချည်းပဲ။

 8. nuts and bolts

bolt က မူလီ၊ nut ကတော့ မူလီခေါင်း။ nuts and bolts of something ဆိုတာ ဆိုကြပါစို့၊ အင်ဂျင်စက်ကြီးတစ်ခုကို ပြင်တာကို မလေ့လာခင် ဒီ အခြေခံအကျဆုံး၊ အသေးအဖွဲလေးတွေဖြစ်တဲ့ nuts တွေ bolts တွေကို သိထားဖို့လိုတယ်။ ဒါ့ကြောင့် အလုပ်တစ်ခု၊ အတတ်ပညာတစ်ခုရဲ့ မသိမဖြစ် အခြေခံအချက်တွေ၊ အောက်ခြေသိမ်းကိစ္စလေးတွေကို nuts and bolts လို့ခေါ်တယ်။

📍I want you to learn how to write well. You have to know the nuts and bolts of writing. 

မင်း စာအရေးအသား ကောင်းဖို့လိုတယ်။ စာရေးခြင်း အတတ်ပညာရဲ့ အခြေခံတွေကို လေ့လာပါ။

 9. spick and span

ဒါကတော့ တောက်ပြောင် သန့်ရှင်းသပ်ရပ်သောလို့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရပါတယ်။ 

📍Your bedroom is always spick and span.

မင်းရဲ့ အိပ်ခန်းကတော့ အမြဲ သန့်ရှင်းနေတာပဲ။

 10. bricks and mortor

brick က အုတ်နီခဲ၊ mortor ကတော့ အင်္ဂတေ။ သရွတ်။ bricks and mortor ဆိုတာ အုတ်စီ အင်္ဂတေကိုင်ထားတဲ့ အဆောက်အဦ building ပေါ့။ ဒီနောက်ပိုင်းခေတ်မှာတော့ online shop တွေ online shopping တွေ ခေတ်စားလာလို့ bricks and mortor store ဆိုတဲ့ usage ပိုအသုံးများလာပါတယ်။ အပြင်မှာ တကယ်မမြင်ရတဲ့ virtual online shop မဟုတ်ဘူး။ bricks and mortor store တကယ် အပြင်မှာဖွင့်ထားတဲ့ ဆိုင် physical store ကိုခေါ်တာပါ။

📍My online shop is going well, but I also want to run a brick-and-mortar store.

ငါ့ရဲ့  online ဆိုင် အလုပ်ဖြစ်နေပေမယ့် တကယ့်အပြင်မှာလည်း ဆိုင်လေး တစ်ဆိုင် ဖွင့်ထားချင်တယ်။

(bricks and mortor ကို hyphenated adjective အနေဖြင့်သုံးတဲ့ပုံစံမှာ အဘိဓာန်အချို့က brick က s ကို ဖြုတ်သော်လည်း အချို့ကတော့ မဖြုတ်တာကို သတိပြုမိပါတယ်။ Cambridge က brick-and-mortor လို့ပြထားပြီး Collins ကတော့ bricks-and-mortor လို့ ဥပမာဝါကျမှာ သုံးပြထားတယ်။)

အင်္ဂလိပ်စာ ဝါသနာရှင်များအတွက် အသုံးဝင်မယ် ထင်ပါတယ်။ ဆက်ရေးပါ့မယ်။
