OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati is leaving the company after 6.5 years.
“After much reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI,” she says on X. “I’m stepping away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration.”
Murati did not announce a successor. CEO Sam Altman says the company will “say more about the transition plans soon.”
OpenAI is also reportedly restructuring the company from a board-controlled nonprofit to a for-profit company, and giving Altman equity, Reuters reports. That could make OpenAI more attractive to investors as it pursues another funding round from companies like Apple and Nvidia, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Murati joined OpenAI in 2018 and was responsible for managing ChatGPT and its image generator, Dall-E, according to The Verge. This year, she oversaw the release of OpenAI’s shiniest features, including Voice Mode, the Sora text-to-video generator, and the GPT-o1 model.
“There’s never an ideal time to step away from a place one cherishes, yet this moment feels right,” she says. “Our recent releases…mark the beginning of a new era [of] interaction and intelligence.”
Her tenure also included serving as interim CEO when Altman temporarily stepped down in November 2023 after a fallout with the board.
“I feel tremendous gratitude towards [Murati] for what she has helped us build and accomplish, but I most of all feel personal gratitude towards her for the support and love during all the hard times,” says Altman.
OpenAI’s leadership team has seen multiple departures this year. Co-founder Ilya Sutskever left in May and has since founded his own company. Researcher Jan Leike followed Sutskever out the door, citing concerns over the company’s AI safety practices; he’s now at Anthropic.
